Leonard Yang

Leonard Yang works primarily in the medium of painting. Utilizing aerial and linear perspective, romantic tones, luminous hues, thick and thin glazes of paint, he creates paintings that describe the changing social and natural landscape we face today. Across his paintings, man-made dwellings, monuments, apartment blocks, and architecture meet minutely detailed landscapes comprising trees, rocks, sky, sea, flowers, critters, and other little observations in the natural environment.

Leonard grew up in Singapore at a time when the country was rapidly undergoing social and economic transitions from third world to first. His childhood was spent discovering unused back roads, hidden vistas, and pockets of nature off the beaten gravel roads that were sprouting up everywhere in the country. His paintings are a reflection of this lived experience and his migratory encounters with other places, cities, and cultures.

Leonard has exhibited in multiple international galleries, including O’Flaherty’s NY, USA, Silvermine Gallery, CT, USA, La Bodega Gallery NY, USA, Gallery MC, NY, USA, Atlantic Gallery NY, USA, Bowery Gallery NY, USA, Agora Gallery NY, USA, Dongdaemun Design Centre, Seoul, Korea, and the National Gallery of Indonesia. Leonard’s most recent solo exhibition was held at Your Mother Gallery, Singapore. Other local institutions that Leonard has held exhibitions with include The Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS), The Visual Arts Development Association (VADA) Singapore, and Mizuma Gallery, Singapore.

Leonard has held residencies at Millay Arts, NY, USA and the Goethe Institute, Jakarta, Indonesia. His paintings have been featured in interviews and publications with Singapore Unbound, Genre Urban Arts, Orenda Arts Journal, the National University of Singapore, and the Goethe Institute, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Leonard graduated from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (BFA 2015), and Parsons, The New School for Design, New York, NY (MFA 2019)
